ABSTRACT

A number of scholars have, conversely, attempted to stress the link between nahw and bala'ga. The complete separation between nahw and bala'ga is, unrealistic, and should not be expected. It is the inability to distinguish between the relation of nahw to sarf and the relation of nahw to bala'ga which caused widespread misunderstanding among those contemporary Arab scholars who have, following a wrong interpretation of the tradition, always thought of sarf and nahw as one unit, and of balaga as another unit only distantly related to the first. One has to admire GURGANI's effort in making word-order a subject which deserves study in its own right, previously being no more than scattered comments in the ki-tab and other grammatical works. GURGANI draws a distinction between a nominal predicate and a verbal one: While the former, according to him, implies no renewal or repetition, the latter does indicate such repetition.
