ABSTRACT

Fundamentally, there are basic hygiene factors that need to be in place before people can even approach high levels of engagement and performance. A good working environment is absolutely essential: clean kitchens and toilets, warmth, adequate space, lighting and furniture, pay and benefits. Although I’m assuming that these are in place in most organisations and that they are looking to engage at a higher level, it’s worth asking yourself whether you’re doing enough to ensure that the basics are in place. Are carpets bright and clean? Are there sufficient facilities for people to be able to work at their best? Do people have fair pay for the jobs they’re doing?
