ABSTRACT

The manager’s role in engagement starts with leaders and managers seeing it as a core part of the management job. I believe that the primary reason we aren’t in a world where every manager is adept at managing and leading is because organisations don’t value people management enough. It’s not surprising that managers feel that their role is to deliver operationally first, with people management and engagement a secondary consideration. The preference in most company cultures is to measure progress through key performance indicators and financial targets. This drives what the organisation values, and thus heavily influences management behaviour.
