The Year 604 [1207–1208]
This chapter deals with the events of the year 604 (1207-1208) in the lifetime of Ibn al-Athir. It gives an account of Khwarazm Shah’s conquest of Transoxania and the discords that occurred in Khurasan and their settlement. ‘Ala’ al-Din Muhammad, the son of Khwarazm Shah [Tekesh], crossed the Oxus to fight the Qarakhitay. The reason for this was that the Qarakhitay had ruled for a long time in Turkestan and Transoxania, and the inhabitants had suffered under their burdensome oppression. The chapter gives a detailed account of the killing of Ibn Kharmil and the siege of Herat. When al-Husayn ibn Kharmil and Jaldik caught sight of one another, they dismounted to meet. Jaldik had given orders to his men to arrest ibn Kharmil, so they mingled with them both and got between Ibn Kharmil and his followers, and then seized him. Other events of the year include the treacherous behaviour of ruler of Samarqand towards the Khwarazmians.
