The Year 622 [1225–1226]
This chapter deals with the events of the year 622 (1225-1226) in the lifetime of Ibn al-Athir. It gives an account of the Georgians’ siege of Ganja. When the Georgians arrived and camped about it, they engaged the defenders behind the city wall for several days. Then one day the people of Ganja and the soldiers among them sallied forth and engaged the Georgians outside the town in a violent and major battle. The chapter describes the coming of Jalal al-Din ibn Khwarazm Shah to Khuzistan and Iraq. Jalal al-Din ibn Khwarazm Shah Muhammad ibn Tekesh came from Indian lands because he had gone there when the Tatars invaded Ghazna. Subsequently, he left India and passed Isfahan and took it under his control, and then proceeded to Fars. During Safar that year, al-Afdal, son of Saladin, died suddenly in the citadel of Sumaysat.
