ABSTRACT

One of the distinctive features of Central-European culture was the close link between scientific rigour and philosophical analysis, critical reflection and technical investigation. This was a feature and style which – as Rudolf Haller rightly points out – can be well presented by Brentano’s thesis that the method of philosophy is the method of science. Thus Haller discerns in Brentano the pioneer of a new philosophy. “In ihm (Brentano) sehen wir den eigentlichen Begründer der Österreichischen Philosophie in Mitteleuropa … Das erste Programm dieser Philosophie in der zweiten Habilitationsthese Brentanos.” 1 But we may also ask: was Brentano also the inspirer of a new science?
