ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the set of issues, and does so by examining the theology of Karl Barth. It is therefore hoped that the work will have something to offer in two ways: firstly in opening up further discussion of the ascension and its importance within the framework of dogmatic theology, especially for a church struggling with its faith. Secondly in addressing a significant aspect of Barth's thought in such a way as to contribute to contemporary Barth studies and discussions. Theology has the task of reflecting, obediently, on the reality of God revealed to us in Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth and the Saviour of the world. In order to develop an understanding of the place of Jesus' ascension, and of Barth's particular treatment of it, three other protestant theologians are engaged in relation to Barth and to Jesus' ascension.
