So this dissecting was a practice, an avowedly Catholic practice, in which the human body was avoided as a subject for dissection, even though it was knowledge of human anatomy that was being sought. This view, that the dissection of the human body was abhorrent, was also one held by at least two noted Fathers of the Church, Tertullian and St Augustine.4
