ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the preceding chapters of this book. The book assesses the African Union's (AU's) array of Pan-African instruments and institutions, sanctions, legal instruments and strategies that can be utilized to protect and improve the welfare of African people. The challenge facing the African Union will be to find a way to ensure a more effective means of implementing the existing instruments of international law and promote the emerging instruments of Pan-African law. The book addresses the issues that the AU needs to ensure that the peacebuilding and development initiatives succeed. In the final analysis, the African Union initiatives will only be successful to the extent that they succeed in instilling new principles of governance and social economic justice and political inclusion. The AU provides a collective forum for action for Africa to contribute towards world affairs and encourage countries both in Africa and in other parts of the world.
