ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the importance of the aspect of the practice curriculum by helping teachers to consider how to teach the integration of theory and practice; it also considers how they might integrate practice teaching theory and practice. The practice curriculum has made more demands of practice teachers to teach theories of social work practice and method. Agency-based learning gives students the opportunity to observe practitioners using a practice method and to try it out for them. It provides the chance to explore different approaches to social work practice, and for students to think about the implicit theories by which they interpret the world. The student should also learn to become aware of the impact of practice wisdom or practice theory. Students are likely to find that untested assumptions and practice experience inform practice in agencies more than a coherent, systematic theory.
