ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by the area of anti-racist practice teaching by asking teachers to isolate race as a dynamic in the practice teacher-student relationship. Practice teachers often enjoy the new theory and practices which are stimulated by exposure to students on placement. Teachers have a responsibility to provide opportunities for the student to learn about anti-racist practice in a practice setting, and to gather evidence to support teachers' judgement about the student's abilities. However, the training programme as a whole has the task of making sure that anti-racist practice is a key feature of the course curriculum and finding ways of supporting teachers' practice teaching. A powerful expression of oppression is the denial of the achievements of oppressed groups or individuals within the group. The re-discovery of historical persons as Black is part of the process which makes the achievements of black people visible and valued.
