Intervention can be considered as the period of the agreement, running through from problem to goal via tasks. Maintenance is the work undertaken on a regular basis to provide a consistent and rell:!tively unchanged service. A period of intervention by a worker using task-centred methods might be followed by a period of maintenance in which, for example, a home help visits to provide homebased care. As long as the maintenance period continues there will be a need to review the situation at intervals, to see if circumstances have changed and if a new period of intervention is required. This pattern may also apply to supervision after a court appearance. A period of intervention may be followed by a period of maintenance when there is no active work, but there is a review of behaviour and problems to check on any specified elements of the supervision and to see if there is need for a repeated period of intervention.
