ABSTRACT

On September 3, 1989, a Varig Brazilian Airlines Boeing 737-200 made a crash landing in the jungle.

At the beginning of the last sector of the flight, the flight crew selected course 270 instead of course 027 - the correct course. This took the aircraft right out over the Amazon Jungle, where there are few aeronautical aids. As a consequence of the incorrect course being set, the aircraft ran out of fuel over the jungle, miles from anywhere.
