ABSTRACT

The Boat Store in H. M. Dockyard, Sheerness, stands today almost unchanged since it was erected. The structural drawings were prepared in 1858 and work began that year. The iron columns bear plaques of 1859 and the contractor's final account was settled in August 1860 when construction had been completed. The drawings were signed by G. T. Greene; and Mr. L. G. Harris, Civil Engineer in Chief, that Colonel Greene was holding the office of Director of Engineering and Architectural Works from 1850 to 1864. The Boat Store was discovered, in effect, by Eric de Mare during his photographic exploration of early industrial architecture in England; the results of which appear in "The Functional Tradition", a special number of the Architectural Review, in July 1957, edited by J. M. Richards. Sufficient evidence is available to show that Greene must be reckoned a significant figure in the development of iron structure, with the Boat Store as his master work.
