ABSTRACT

The aero engines market is international and the needs of their worldwide civil and military customers, shaped by political and economic events around the globe, are reviewed. Environmental issues are increasingly important. The first noise limits were imposed on civil aircraft in 1968 and more stringent limits followed in 1976. The prime concern nowadays for subsonic civil engines is Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX) which, when released at high altitude, produces ozone which contributes to the greenhouse effect. Technical and financial partnerships to reduce cost and share the risk of technology acquisition are expected to increase. Recently in the United Kingdom (UK) there has been a major initiative called Foresight Action led by Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) on behalf of the Defence and Aerospace Foresight Panel. This is developing a national Aerospace Technology Demonstration programme coordinating the activities of the airframe, propulsion and equipment sectors.
