ABSTRACT

Rotterdam is actively promoting the city as the capital of sports, a title it claims on the strength of several trump cards. First, Rotterdam is host to several annual sports events with an international air, such as the Generale Bank Marathon Rotterdam (among the fastest in the world), the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (the world’s greatest indoor tennis event) and the ‘Concours Hippique International Oflficiel’ (CHIO). Secondly, the city hosted five matches - including the finals - of the European Champions’ Football 2000 (EURO 2000), organised jointly by the Dutch and Belgian football associations. Thirdly, Rotterdam is the home town of Feyenoord, one of the most successful Dutch football clubs, possessing the European and World Cups in its trophy cabinet.
