ABSTRACT

Deep ecology can be divided into a philosophy of ecology – which asks deeper questions concerning our relationship to the environment – and a social/political movement which follows a set of guidelines called the Deep Ecology Platform (DEP).1 In calling itself a movement deep ecology comes under attack, both for scorning selfcriticism and for being prescriptive rather than meta-ethical. As a philosophy, deep ecology is no less controversial, but this is tied to its failure to address what might be termed the human rights issue.
