ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, a growing interest in unearthing the sociological mechanisms that underlie the way in which we choose to transport ourselves has developed. This chapter will touch upon some of the essential themes of late modern society and describe how they are interwoven with the kind of mobility one chooses. I wish to highlight some ideas and stories about the car and the public transport system that are accepted as ‘common knowledge’ and ‘common truth’ and as such guide transport behaviour. This will be done by presenting the term ‘structural stories’, these can be found in all areas of life, but here they are related to mobility, a theme that was developed as a part of my Master’s thesis (Freudendal-Pedersen, Hartmann-Petersen and Roslind, 2002).
