ABSTRACT

The link between social stratification and values, attitudes and aspirations is complex. The distribution matrix that constitutes the stratification order can be assumed to affect the subjective states of mind of actors located at different positions within it. As put by Breen and Rottman, this poses a formidable challenge to contemporary class analysis: ‘one of linking a material basis (differential rewards) to differential forms of consciousness’ (Breen and Rottman, 1995, p. 466).
