ABSTRACT

Every organization produces and delivers a mixture of products and services to its customers. The supermarket is fulfilling a basic need for grocery produce, and adding value by making the process of obtaining items easier. Several major players world-wide today are using Six Sigma to revolutionize their company performance, and each has a well-structured and well-implemented strategy into which such a quality initiative has been carefully introduced. It is useful to start by defining the core products and services that an organization produces and delivers, and then list all the internal functions that go to make up the entire business. Process mapping allows a full consideration of what are core and enabling processes, and the identification of added-value, enabling and non-added value process steps. As a general guideline for businesses, it is possible to arrive at a simplified set of typical core processes and underlying enabling functions.
