ABSTRACT

Iceland was wooded from the mountains to the coast. But in time the grazing of the sheep and the use of the timber for practical purposes eradicated the woods.

10 Þingvallahraun. The Þingvellir lava eld forms the bottom of the northern part of Lake Þingvallavatn. It originated in a major ssure eruption. The many single Žows of this lava are easily visible in Almannagjá (see above p. 93, n. 2).
