ABSTRACT

Thirty thousand NGO delegates convened at the NGO Forum 1995 in Beijing. Some of them had spent years preparing for their participation in the event. They each had their own story. This chapter focuses on the stories of the NGO delegates. Social conflict emerges and develops on the basis of the meaning and interpretation people involved attach to action and events. The chapter introduces the three organizations: the US and Western European members of WILPF; the Sudanese Women's Voice for Peace (SWVP); and Beneath Paradise. It describes the background of each organization and presents the stories of some of their members. The chapter discusses the different types of resources available to them and provides an overview of each organization's participation at the PrepComs, the NGO Forum '95, and the FWCW, if they attended. The Sudanese Women's Voice for Peace (SWVP) is a young organization in comparison to WILPF.
