Marine Science in the Early Nineteenth Century: A Period of Growth

THE disturbed period of the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars saw some diminution in the study of marine science. Fewer observations were made at sea, partly because oceanic exploration was largely curtailed. Nevertheless the expansion begun in the late eighteenth century was maintained and reached its peak in the years 1815 to 1830.
