Gabriele D'Annunzio: Defiant Archangel (Oxford: Clarendon, 1998), pp. 12-13. Woodhouse writes 'the question of the spelling of the name, d'Annunzio or D'Annunzio, is still debated. D'Annunzio always signed himself "Gabriele d'Annunzio", the form which implied a noble origin [which he did not have]. More down-to-earth compilers of library indexes incline to D'Annunzio in all circumstances.' I have come down on one side for reasons of factual correctness.
