ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will provide information about Internet-based as well as paper-based resources in the overall aviation safety domain. Government sources such as the FAA, NTSB, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics have reliable quantitative data at the system level. Such data will tell you the overall trend in aviation safety and you will be able to compare these data across different modes of transportation. If you are interested in causal analysis, you will have to read through each accident report in great detail and manually analyze the data. If you are interested in understanding whether a particular safety course in your organization is effective, you will need to do some detailed data collection. The bottom line is that there are plenty of sources that provide the general, systemic data; but few that can provide reliable, consistent data at a microscopic level.
