Evaluatingthecharacterandmagnitudeofself-helpamongstdeprived urbanpopulationsisimportantbecauseitchallengesmanyofthemyths thathavegrownupsurroundingself-helpactivity.However,merely challengingthesemythscannotandshouldnotbeanendinitself.As outlinedinchapter2,theadvancedeconomiesasawhole,anddeprived urbanneighbourhoodsinparticular,areconfrontinganemployment problemwherebyitisunlikelythatsufficientemploymentcanbeprovided toalloweverybodytopossessformaljobs.Atthesametime,thereappears tobeashiftofeconomicactivityfromthemarkettothenon-marketsphere ashighlightedinchapter3.Deprivedpopulationshowever,appearlessable toengageinself-helpactivitythanmoreaffluentpopulations.
