ABSTRACT

Another group had left Trinidad as school leavers in their late teens and early 20s for further education, skill acquisition and overseas experience, but stayed abroad after their studies and lived overseas for many years (between 12 and 30 plus, is our characterization), before eventually returning. We refer to this cohort of youthful pre-retirement returnees as prolonged sojourners, in large part because many viewed their stay overseas as temporary and had every intention of returning home sometime – sooner or later.
