ABSTRACT

Power and the appearance of power do not necessarily go hand in hand. Appearances can be deceptive. Figureheads masquerading in the guise of power can divert attention from those who really have it. Yet the appearance does not always deceive – many truly powerful people can in fact be found in the spotlight. A study of power’s appearance should therefore not be rejected out of hand in a search for the real thing, not at least if we supplement it with other methods. (For we must still, of course, peek behind a curtain or two to find powerful people avoiding the limelight).
