ABSTRACT
The meaning of political representation has been discussed for centuries. Empirical research in the field has also reached a mature age: systematic studies have been going on since the 1950s. Despite these considerable efforts, however, it has not proved possible to reach any substantial agreement. Scholars still hold diametrically opposed conceptions about how representative systems work and should work.
