ABSTRACT

Dawa literally means 'call' and in Islamic terminology 'an invitation to Islam', and it is the raison d'etre of the existence of the Muslim ummah, both at the micro and macro level. It is wrong to assume that dawa is aimed only at non-Muslims and that Muslims, by virtue of their birth in a Muslim family or [by] declaring the Kalimah as Shahadah, the declaration of faith, at the time of entering the fold of Islam, have been absolved of this responsibility for life. Since dawa is essentially a call for change from sickness to health and the daiyah is not merely a transmitter of a message, it is essential that a rapport be established between the proponent and the listener. The theoretical framework of dawa being such, the contemporary situation of the Muslim ummah does not inspire much hope for we are performing almost no dawa.
