ABSTRACT

If we accept the premise that site selection is a critical part of a sound patient recruitment strategy and acknowledge that most clinical studies fail to enroll on time, then it stands to reason there might be something wrong with the site selection process. Generally, sponsors seem to have adequate methods for screening sites for their medical and technical qualifications. But far less attention is given to screening sites for their likely patient recruitment success. As discussed in Chapter 3, sites are usually chosen based on investigatorfocused criteria from three primary sources:

1. Key opinion leaders

2. Principal investigators (PIs) who have already worked with a sponsor on other studies

3. Institutions with large databases that performed well in previous studies.
