ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses the experiences of both the European Union and Asia in their approach to political integration or political rapprochement. It provides an historical overview of the European integration process and the European Union’s achievements. The book highlights the main characteristics of economic integration in Europe and Asia in an historical perspective. It also provides an overview of Europe's major achievements in terms of economic integration, giving an insight into their underlying theoretical foundations. The book shows that the long and slow progress of integration experienced by European countries cannot be imitated in any other parts of the world. It examines the need and conditions for monetary integration or cooperation in Asia and reviews various ideas pertaining to regional monetary cooperation in Asia.
