ABSTRACT

Let the preliminary remark be made that freedom is not given by one man to another. Man is free by nature, not by grant. One man cannot give another freedom; he can only restrain freedom or remove restraint. The ultimate basis for the restraint of freedom is the freedom of the person who restrains, for there is no valid reason for restraining the freedom of one except to preserve the freedom of others. Nor does the abstract freedom which is every man’s by his nature add up to an equal portion of freedom for each. In existing reality some need more freedom than others, and the degree of freedom which one has is measured by the degree of responsibility which he has. Parents have greater freedom than children. To meet our problem in this study, those who bear authority in the Church need and have more

freedom neither of those in authority nor of those under authority is granted by the other party.
