ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at two alternative historical methodologies commonly identified as life history and biographical approaches. Each attempts to detail and examine extended periods of time and draw from the usually rich lived experiences of research participants. We first look at life history research, which investigates the recounted experiences of a person’s life. Then we will look at the related yet distinct biographical approaches that emphasise the discussion and narrating of life. We also discuss the use of a diary by the researcher or sometimes even participants, a method that can also be used alongside other methods such as the interview.
