ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the use of the internet to undertake qualitative social work research. The internet can now be used to facilitate a significant proportion of literature-based research, including with support from methodologies such as the systemic review or a critical interpretive synthesis (chapter five). This chapter builds upon such recent developments by exploring two other key forms of internet-based research methods: the questionnaire and the interview. The chapter also looks at some additional advantages that online research provides as well as some of the potential problems that may become apparent, such as bias or ethical hazards and dilemmas. Finally, a list of some helpful sites is presented, alongside a case study which illustrates how the internet can been used to undertake qualitative research.
