ABSTRACT

The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has accelerated the formation of a global economy in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The global economy is characterized by interdependencies which extend beyond the nation state in terms of production, finance, distribution, and trade (Dicken 1998). Faced with global economic restructuring and intensifying international competition, each place has to actively market itself to achieve local economic development (Kotler et al. 1993). A popular development strategy is to establish science parks. This chapter investigates how strategic actors in Taiwan aim at achieving global integration and high-technology development through the establishment of science parks.
