ABSTRACT

In some cases the planning organisation may not be in the same continent as the place where the work is carried out, hence regular and efficient progress reporting will be one of the project manager's main responsibilities. The project manager will need to progress the tasks as they occur and liaise regularly with the departmental heads. A part of that team is likely to be a project planning engineer or, in the case of a very large project, a team of planners. In this arrangement, the project manager will only have an interest in the project plan at a broad level, setting out the general framework of activities, objectives and timescales for the planning engineers to turn into detailed activity plans. The project manager's approval may well be needed to implement the new plan as it may call for changed priorities, more expenditure, overtime working, or any of a host of other possibilities.
