ABSTRACT

We examine the coping strategies followed by slum dwellers when household members are struck with illness. Strategies include borrowing money, diversifying income sources, women going to work, reducing expenditure, use of savings, sale of assets, merging households, movement of family members, movement to rural areas, use of gifts and other help. A particular purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the range of strategies taken and their possible effects, positive and negative.
