ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a series of activities grouped around the generic process of Continuing Professional Development, or CPD. CPD is an important element of both empowering individuals to take responsibility in their own development and assisting them, their managers and the Training Function to plan and record progress. The chapter also considers the importance of differentiating between professional and personal development. Learning and applying personal development skills such as objective reasoning, dynamic co-operation and stress management not only helps the individual cope with private and business life in a more rounded, confident way – but can also help when assimilating and applying particular professional development skills within the workplace. The chapter discusses empowerment is the ongoing responsibility of the individual. Empowerment can occur within a positive atmosphere and supportive framework. It explains the principle of 'triangular integration'. Integrated triangle supports the individual, the manager and the training as the three corner points.
