ABSTRACT

One of the causes of aggressive and violent behaviour is when people feel that there is an intrusion into their private life. Many social workers routinely visit their clients at home, particularly where the home circumstances form part of an assessment or monitoring plan. The likelihood of violence against social workers in other people's homes may depend on why they are there. A social worker providing active support and assistance to the parent of a child assessed as having special needs is likely to receive a very different reception from a social worker taking a child into care. It is common for home helps to collect pensions for clients. This can make them vulnerable to attack by people who are not clients. Social workers do not work solely in the workplace; many travel to clients' homes, schools, hospitals, hostels, other care agencies, police stations, prisons and the courts.
