ABSTRACT

Social policy questions which involved peace with justice included equal access to health care and to opportunities in higher education, fairness in the treatment of juveniles convicted of offences and the task of reconciliation with Australia's indigenous peoples. Deliberations about this Centre's objectives had produced a trinity of ideas which we regarded as synonymous with peace with justice in any context or country. The Centre's development can be marked in terms of stages, each characterized by projects concerned with education about social justice. The Peace Foundation is an alliance of business, media, academic and community sector representatives. Its executive committee meets monthly to determine the choice and conduct of each year's activities, including well publicized seminars on peace with justice issues. For example, the public seminar in 2004 was given by former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans on humanitarian intervention as a challenge to state sovereignty.
