ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that this literature guide has shown an upsurge of interest in air transportation safety with an ever-broadening range of critical thinking and policy implications. The material has been presented in a conceptual framework for the benefit of safety practitioners, students, as well as the general public who wish to further explore the area. Three major "Schools" of thought and their philosophical underpinnings have been identified and form the basis of the chapters. In presenting the transportation safety literature, what has clearly stood out is its ever expanding, ornni-disciplinary nature that has given, and continues to give rise to, alternative thinking and new ways of measuring "safety" and in addressing what can be done about preventing accidents.
