ABSTRACT

There is a saying often used in Britain, concerning the United States of America and it states 'that if it is big in America it will soon be big over here'. So MacDonalds, Coca Cola, big screen cinemas, soap operas are all popular in the US and now they are thriving in Britain as well. This chapter explores whether one can apply the same simple truism, to the influence of African-American culture on black cultural identities around the world, particularly in the English speaking African diaspora. If it is big in the African-American community in the US, does that mean that it will be big in the black community in London, England or in Kingston, Jamaica? The chapter will argue that in recent times there has been a shift in the way in which ideas concerning black culture and identity are shared and utilised around the globe.
