ABSTRACT
For all the reasons given above, therefore, the still-persistent attempts of some believers to read Genesis 1-3 as an historical account of cosmic and human origins are hopelessly misguided, and from the scientific standpoint thoroughly discredited. But it would be equally wrong to conclude from this that the Bible and modern science are utterly unrelated or incompatible. Faulting the creation stories for their lack of modern scientific content distorts them as much as does the insistence of modern creationists on reading them literally, and obscures what science and Genesis do in fact have in common.
