ABSTRACT

With the move of Western hemisphere industries to other parts of the world in the 1960s, vacant factories, industrial ruins and disengaged waterfront areas became desirable urban areas. In the ‘post-industrial society’ of today, reusing buildings is a widespread strategy to create attractive and exciting urban environments for trendy citizens. Old industrial buildings such as factories, mines and warehouses have become the new temples of culture, creating space for art and cultural events such as galleries, concert halls, amphitheatres and museums, as well as commercial activities for marketing, shopping centres, restaurants and lifestyle hotels. Placemaking and staging based on the principle of expressive creativity through reuse and recycling are critically important to the cultural economy.
