ABSTRACT
Dunkirk’s Second World War beach bunkers and eighteenth-century batteries remain unoccupied, appearing as tilting ruins, decaying amongst the sand dunes. The territory has been declared a ‘wildlife sanctuary’ and a national museum. The future of the divided city of Nicosia, Cyprus, is currently being negotiated politically, with the opening up of border crossings, the dismantling of bridges and the return of an airport. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Berlin’s ‘No Man’s Land’ has been largely assimilated invisibly back into the city fabric via a series of urban design projects, despite some radical forms of urban life which flourished temporarily in the political and spatial void.
