ABSTRACT

Nuclear nonproliferation has been one of the most important issues, but also one of the most difficult, in the field of international peace and security since the advent of the nuclear age in 1945. The issue has been dealt with nationally, regionally, plurilaterally, and globally. At the 2000 Okinawa Summit, Japan tackled the issue as part of the G8 summit of major democracies. The Okinawa G8 communique welcomed the successful outcome of the 2000 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. It further recognised that the disposition and management of weapon-grade plutonium no longer required for defence purposes remain top priorities.
