ABSTRACT
There is a growing awareness that, in the past, insufficient consideration has been given to what is called the ‘robustness’ of the road network. It is only during the last decade that considerable research interest has started to emerge for this important aspect of the transportation system. Current research interests, see, for example, Bell and Cassir (2000) and Bell and Iida (2003), include network design, travel behaviour under conditions of uncertainty and the definition of reliability measures for networks.
