ABSTRACT

The motto of King James’s time on the English throne was ‘Beati pacifici’. It signifies one of the most prominent elements of his international policy as well as of his self-representation: the demonstration of himself as a ‘Peace Maker’, as someone who can preserve peace and unity in Europe in spite of all the confessional enmities between the different monarchies and also within most of the countries themselves.2 James was particularly proud of a long period of peace between Spain and England, two countries which were at war for most of the reign of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth.3
