ABSTRACT

China appears several times in Utzon’s writings and related publications throughout his lifetime, especially in almost all of his sporadic manifestoes.3 This suggests that the inspiration and inuence of China and Utzon’s architectural career were intimately inter-national. Both have been within a context of international dissemination and transformation of ideas associated with China. Through a review of Utzon’s sociocultural background and an examination of the interrelationship between his perception and application of Chinese ideas, this chapter investigates the empathy between China and the Nordic states as the ground of Utzon’s internationalism. Furthermore our study of Utzon’s library and his readings of China, interviews with his family and several lifetime friends, as well as his publications, reveals the architect’s sense of inter-nationalism.
